The following information was supplied by the Monroe Police Department. No arrested person is guilty until so judged in a court of law.
Police arrested a Bridgeport man Tuesday for the alleged theft of 10 packs of cigarettes from Walgreens Pharmacy, 275 Monroe Turnpike, on Dec. 26.
Rondell Williams, 30, of Rainbow Road was being held in court on Golden Hill Street in Bridgeport for an unrelated incident, when Monroe police served a warrant charging him with sixth-degree larceny. Bond was set at $20,000 and Williams was turned back over to judicial marshals.
At around 11:22 a.m. on Dec. 26, a store manager at Walgreens Pharmacy told police a man — who the ensuing investigation identified as Williams — asked a cashier for a carton of Newports, according to the report. When told there were no cartons, he asked for 10 packs instead. As the cashier was ringing up the order, police said Williams allegedly reached across the counter, grabbed the bag of cigarettes and ran out the door.
The store manager was able to get a description of the suspect's vehicle and license plate. Each pack of Newports cost $8.67, according to the report.
