Police Fine Driver in Accident with Pedestrians

Police issued an infraction to John Verdeschi, 66, of Highland Drive in Monroe for failure to grant right of way to a pedestrian at a crosswalk following Tuesday night's accident in which he allegedly struck two pedestrians at the intersection of Route 111 and Moose Hill Road, near Fan Hill Road.

The two pedestrians, a 21-year-old Monroe man and a 24-year-old Monroe man were both transported to St. Vincent's Medical Center for evaluation of what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries, police said.

At around 8:05 p.m. Tuesday, police said Verdeschi drove north on Monroe Turnpike from the intersection of Moose Hill Road, and told officers he stopped at a stop sign and looked left, waiting for the traffic to clear and proceeded on Route 111. But he said he didn't see the pedestrians in the crosswalk, adding the lighting was very poor in the area, according to police.
