Police Reports: A Case of Mistaken Identity

When a day laborer owed back taxes, the IRS came after the wrong man, according to police.

Two years ago, an Oxford contractor hired a day laborer for a job, paid him $2,957 and sent out a 1099 form to the Internal Revenue Service to record it. Unfortunately for a Wheeler Road man who had not done any work for the contractor, the laborer has the same name as he does and the IRS came after him for back taxes owed.

Police had contacted the contractor on behalf of the now 39-year-old Monroe resident that year and he had told them it was an accounting error.

Everyone thought the problem had been resolved until the Monroe resident received another letter from the IRS seeking the money on Monday.
