Police Reports: Drunk Driver Arrested in Liquor Store Parking Lot

Officers arrested a Shelton man for DUI, a West Haven man on a warrant and responded to a vandalism complaint

The following arrest information was supplied by the Monroe Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

DUI in Liquor Store Parking Lot

A motorist called police at 5:02 p.m. Monday after a blue 2002 Jeep Liberty pulled out of the Comaro Shopping Center parking lot on Monroe Turnpike, going over the grass, and nearly hit his vehicle head on, according to the report.

The driver of the jeep then stopped and went back to the shopping center  parking lot — over the grass — before parking in front of GlenRo Spirit Shoppe, 487 Monroe Turnpike, police said.

Officers responding to the call found Edwin Deveny, 55, of Winchester Drive in Shelton sitting in his jeep. Police said Deveny had the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on him, bloodshot, glassy eyes and slow, slurred speech.

Field tests determined Deveny was under the influence and breath tests at headquarters showed a blood alcohol level above the legal limit, police said.

Deveny was charged with driving under the influence and released on $500 bond for a July 19 court date.

Though Deveny parked in front of GlenRo, he did not make any purchases there.

The Geek is Back

"Geek" "A Geek" was scrawled on the back of the Stop & Shop building at 470 Monroe Turnpike, according to a vandalism complaint filed at 5:36 Monday morning.

Officers on patrol discovered the graffiti on the south wall behind the building. "Geek" was spray painted there with "A Geek" beneath it, police said.

This is not the first time this tag was written. On June 24, an officer found it in black paint behind the Village Square shopping center building on Monroe Turnpike.

Prawn Warrant Arrest

Police arrested a West Haven man Monday night, when a background check found New Haven police had an active warrant for his arrest.

Carlos Strickland, 33, of Stevens Avenue was charged with violation of probation. Bond was set at $50,000 for a July 12 court date.
