Police Reports: DUI, Pot and Jamaican Fraud

Police warn residents of two scams coming out of Jamaica; a search and seizure warrant led to a drug arrest, and a Northford man was charged with DUI

DUI on Main Street

A Northford man was arrested for drunken driving at 2:17 Friday morning after a police officer saw his vehicle swerve over the center line while heading south on Main Street, according to the report.

Ronald Simonelli Jr., 21, of Mountainview Terrace was charged with driving under the influence and failure to maintain the established lane. He was held on $500 bond and arraigned later this morning.

Police said there was a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on Simonelli, his speech was slurred and he had trouble finding his driver's license and registration card. Field sobriety tests and a breath test determined he was under the influence, according to police.

Town officers assisted Shelton police with a search and seizure warrant at Route 34 apartment in Monroe after someone accused of stealing a handgun told them he left it there.

Police said the man who lived there did not steal the handgun, however, during the search, less than four ounces of marijuana and smoking pipes were in plain view, so officers arrested him.

Kevin Scheer Jr., 22, was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia and released on a promise to appear in court.

Beware of Scams

A Monroe woman told police someone claiming to be from the company, Gold Rush Promotions in Philadelphia called to inform her she won a Mercedes Benz and over $2 million. But to claim her prize, she would have to wire them a $190 processing fee.

Before hanging up, she asked the caller for a phone number she could call him back at. The resident filed a police complaint and a detective determined that the number came from Jamaica.

Police warn residents of a similar scam out of Kingston, Jamaica, in which a caller claiming to be with Publisher's Clearinghouse, is calling people to tell them they won a prize, but that they first have to send a money-gram to process it.
