Police Reports: Fraud, Theft and a DUI

The following information was supplied by the Monroe Police Department. No arrested person is guilty until so judged in a court of law.

Police are investigating a possible fraud with connections from New York to Texas. The target, a Wild Horse Court resident, walked into the Monroe Police Department  Thursday, Sept. 15, to file a complaint. She brought with her several letters.

In June she received a letter claiming she owed $2389.73 for a purchase she never made. She was suspicious and called the contact in the letter. The contact claimed that a Ford Mustang was purchased in Texarkana, Texas, under her name from McLarty Auto Mall.

Calling the dealership herself, personnel confirmed that there was no record of the transaction. Consequently, she dismissed the whole affair as an error.

Sept. 15, the woman received two more letters. One from a person claiming to be an attorney representing a company called Credit & Acceptance, which had supposedly hired him to collect a debt. The other from RJM Acquisitions in New York claiming she owed $415.82 on an account. Calling the listed contact number she received no answers.

Police are actively working on the case and warn Monroe residents to watch their credit cards and report any suspicious mail.

Stolen Runners

Sept. 16- El Coyote Restaurant, 838 Main St. reported three rugs missing from behind the facility. A co-owner explained that the rugs, (two runners 2ft. by 12 ft. and another 2ft. by 14 ft.) are cleaned and hung out every Thursday night before closing. They were gone the next morning. The three stolen among several hanging out, were emblazoned with the El Coyote logo. Their estimated worth is $300.

DUI Arrest

Sept. 17-  At 2:01 a.m. officers pulled over a ’99 Chrysler Sebring at Route 110 and Wheeler Road, after watching it weave down the double yellow line on Monroe Tpk.

The driver, Adam Wait, 26, of 196 New Haven Ave., Derby, smelled strongly of alcohol. He seemed confused and disoriented. Empty beer cans were noticed in the vehicle.

The standard field tests for sobriety were given. He failed all three and was arrested for failure to drive in the proper lane. At headquarters he refused to take the breath test which measures alcohol in the body.

Wait posted the $500 bond and is due in court September 26.
