An officer responded to a hit and run complaint at 9:17 Tuesday night, after a 52-year-old Hills of Monroe resident told them the driver of a green Subaru Legacy struck his 2000 Buick LeSabre from behind while he was stopped at a red light at the intersection of Main Street and Bart Road. Instead of pulling over to exchange insurance information, the man told police the other driver passed him and took off, continuing south on Route 25, according to the report.

The officer notified Trumbull and state police of the incident and within a half hour, a Connecticut State trooper stopped the Subaru on the Route 25 Connector, near exit 8, police said.

Monroe police officers were called to the scene and police said the driver, David Jerkowski, 26, of Framingham Drive in Waterbury had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on him. Field sobriety tests determined he was under the influence, police said, adding breath tests at headquarters showed a blood alcohol level above the legal limit.

Jerkowski was charged with driving with a suspended license, evading responsibility, following too close and DUI. Bond was set at $500 for a June 19 court date.

Police said the accident victim had damage to the rear bumber of his car.
