Police Reports: How Does 1,100 Pounds of Fertilizer Suddenly Appear?

Today's Police Reports contains a DUI arrest, identity theft, two larcenies and 22 bags of fertilizer.

A DUI Arrest

Police arrested a Canterbury Lane man at 2:26 Saturday morning after officers saw him driving his '96 Chevy Tahoe south on Monroe Turnpike — near Gay Bower Road — without his headlights on, according to the report.

Alexander Albrecht, 19, was charged with driving under the influence and failure to have his headlights lit. He was released on $500 bond for a May 31 court date.

It is unclear why he was not charged for underage drinking.

When Albrecht's SUV was stopped, police said officers detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage on him, and added he had bloodshot, glassy eyes. Field sobriety tests determined he was under the influence, according to police, who said Albrecht refused to participate in breath tests at headquarters.

A Kwanson Cherry Tree

A $250 Kwanson Cherry Tree and a few smaller plantings were reported stolen Saturday from a display in front of Sunshine Garden Center & Nursery, 288 Monroe Turnpike.

The owner last saw the plants at 7:30 the night before and noticed it was missing at about 11 a.m. Saturday, police said.

An Identity Theft Case

A 31-year-old Mill Brook Terrace woman was contacted by a collections agency in Texas after someone stole her identity and opened an AT&T U-Verse account and ran up $923 of debt, according to the police complaint filed Friday.

She had not opened the account and contacted Southwest Credit Systems, in Carrollton, which gave her the street address on the account, but not the town or state, police said.

Police said the victim's identity had been compromised last month on a debit card she has through Webster Bank, but that she does not know how this most recent breach occurred.

License Plates Switched

A 35-year-old Walnut Hill Road woman told police Sunday evening that someone had stolen the license plate from the back of her car and replaced it with another Connecticut marker plate.

According to the report, she had parked at Wolfe Park at 9:39 a.m. on Sunday and returned at 4 p.m. to find there was a different plate on the back of her vehicle. Police said she was not sure if her plate was stolen at Wolfe Park, but added she believed she would have noticed if it had happened before that.

Mysterious Bags

An officer on patrol Thursday found 22 plastic bags of fertilizer weighing about 50 pounds each outside an abandoned building at 580 Pepper Street at 7:56 p.m. Police said it was not there the night before.

An officer contacted the real estate company, who contacted its landscaper, but no one knew who the bags belong too, according to the report.

No Foul Play

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of a Williams Road woman found in the woods off Hattertown Road on May 11 after she was reported missing two days prior.

The coroner's office in Farmington has said the exact cause of 51-year-old Nancy Souza's death is pending for further study.
