Police Reports: It Wasn't the Repairman

A stranger entered a house through the garage while an elderly woman was still home.

A stranger in her home

A 91-year-old Hattertown Road woman waited for a repairman to fix her dryer Monday afternoon, when a man entered her house through the open garage at 12:33 p.m.

He talked to her for 20 minutes and left.

She thought nothing of it, until the real maintenance man arrived moments later.

Frightened, the woman called the police.

"It was very scary that the person was in the house and she trusted him," Lt. Brian McCauley said Tuesday.

McCauley recommends asking for identification.

"Maintenance people and UPS workers will have ID," he said. "If you're still suspicious of someone, call and verify the person from that agency."

He also advises residents to keep their garage doors closed, because strangers can not only enter a home through it, they can also see what you own.

Nothing appeared to have been stolen from the Hattertown Road house, according to McCauley.

An iPod Touch

An iPod Touch was reported stolen July 19.

Police said a May Court man filed the complaint after searching for it in every possible place it could be since it went missing after a party at his home on June 26.
