Police Reports: Narcotics Arrest and a DUI

Officers arrested a man for drunken driving on Route 111 and another for alleged possession of pot and weapons in a motor vehicle

Narcotics and Weapons

An officer stopped a black 2009 Nissan Ultima heading south in the 300 block of Monroe Turnpike at 1:42 Wednesday afternoon because it had no front marker plate and no Department of Motor Vehicles sticker approving its tinted windows, according to police.

The driver, Jean Paul Piedrahita, 20, of Emerson Street in Norwalk appeared unusually nervous, so officers asked if there were any drugs and weapons in the car, police said.

Piedrahita told police he had smoked marijuana earlier in the day and had some in the car, according to the report, which said he handed over a marijuana blunt and a clear plastic sandwich bag containing a green leafy substance.

Police said officers also removed a can of pepper spray found in the console of the Nissan and a wooden baton from under the front passenger seat.

Piedrahita was charged with possession of marijuana and weapons in a motor vehicle. He was released on $1,000 bond for a May 26 court date.

DUI Arrest

A Hamden man was arrested for drunken driving at 1:53 p.m. Sunday after the driver of a van flagged an officer down on Route 111 and told him a man in a 2006 VW Jetta was passing other vehicles in a no passing zone and had stopped at Masuk High School and urinated on the lawn, according to the report.

The officer looked to where the witness was pointing and saw the Jetta driving in the south bound lane while heading north, before crossing back into the proper lane, police said.

The Jetta was stopped near Old Zoar Road and the driver Carl Altieri, 32, of Webb Street in Hamden had glassy eyes and the odor of an alcoholic beverage on him, according to police. Field sobriety tests at the scene determined he was under the influence, leading to his arrest, and Altieri later refused to take breath tests at police headquarters, police said.

Altieri was charged with driving under the influence and operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license. Bond was set at $500 for a May 31 court date.
