One Payment, No Car

A 45-year-old Edgewood Road woman told police she lost $2,300 in a scam by a Rochester, Minn., woman selling a 2000 VW Jetta on Craigs List.

On Jan. 12, she contacted the seller by email and was told the woman had an uncle who worked at a shipping yard, so she could get a break on the shipping. The victim was told to wire $2,300 to a Google Checkout agent via Western Union. The man's address was in Michigan, police said.

She wired the money from , 535 Main Street. By Jan. 27, the woman still did not get the car, so she called the shipping company, then Google Support, and neither had a record of the transaction.

Police said an Internet search showed con artists using Google Checkout for schemes involving a vehicle is a popular method of online fraud.
