Rite Aid employees closed their 435 Main Street store Friday night, didn't notice the man sleeping near the pharmacy, and locked him inside.

The alarm went off when he moved around and the manager noticed the 20-year-old Monroe man through the window. She pointed to man, standing in the lobby with a shopping bag, and told police, "I don't know him," according to the report.

Police said the man has a mental condition and wanders around day and night, adding he had receipts for the items in his bag.

The man told police he made his purchases, sat down by the pharmacy and fell asleep, waking up when the store music stopped.

Police told him to stay away from the store.

DUI arrest

A 78-year-old Seymour man was arrested for drunken driving Thursday afternoon after police said he was found slumped over the wheel of his Dodge Caravan, sleeping in the Glenro Spirit Shoppe parking lot on Monroe Turnpike.

Robert Lashin of Smith Street was charged with driving under the influence. Bond was set at $500 for a Nov. 29 court date.

Police said the store owner had an employee keep an eye on the car, while he called them at 3:56 p.m.

When officers arrived on the scene, police said the motor of Lashin's Dodge was running and the key was in the ignition. He slept with his head on the steering wheel and an open pint was on the passenger seat, according to the report.

An officer rapped on the window, waking Lashin, who opened it. Police said there was an odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, his eyes were glassy, and that he failed field sobriety tests, leading to his arrest.

"The quick actions of the business owner in recognizing the situation and contacting the police may very well have saved a life on the road," said Lt. Brian McCauley.
