Police Reports: Two DUIs

Two drunken driving arrests were made, including an incident in which a vehicle got stuck on a snow bank on the Town Green

Accident on the Green

A Stratford man driving south on Monroe Turnpike at 12:42 Friday afternoon tried to negotiate the curve by Church Street before losing control of his vehicle, which police say went up over the curb and got stuck on a snow bank on the Town Green.

Police officers responding to the accident said the driver, Richard Benway, 52, had glassy eyes, slurred speech and the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on him. Field sobriety tests determined he was under the influence, police said, adding his breath test showed his blood alcohol was three times over the legal limit of .08 percent.

A 20-year-old Monroe man was arrested for drunken driving Wednesday night, after officers observed his 2003 Nissan Ultima running in the parking lot of the A&G Auto Parts and Enterprise Rent-a-Car building at 75 Main St. after hours, according to the report.

Patrick Mezick was charged with driving under the influence and bond was set at $500 for a Feb. 22 court date.

Police said officers noticed two open beer cans in the vehicle during the incident, which occurred at 9 p.m. Mezick told the officers he had three to five beers that night and agreed to take field sobriety tests, according to the report.

The tests determined he was under the influence, leading to his arrest, according to police, who said his breath test of .125 percent was significantly higher than the .02 percent legal limit for people under the age of 21.
