Police Reports: You Just Won $750k! Now Pay Me.

Officers are investigating harassing phone calls, a fake Boy Scout Troop and the theft of a used water heater.

A Lottery Scam

A 53-year-old East Village Road man received several harassing phone calls Saturday from a New York area code after declining to pay the caller $200 to collect the $750,000 cash prize he told him he had won.

Police said the caller began to harass the man, using foul language, after he did not fall for the common lottery scam.

Bogus Boy Scout Troop

An employee of Edgerton Heating & Air Conditioning, 786 Main Street, told police May 31 that he was approached by a man saying he was affiliated with Boy Scout Troop 713 in East Haven and needed stainless steel scrap metal, so the boys could build robots for a competition.

Edgerton donated approximately $400 worth of metal over the next couple of days, but then the employee grew suspicious and contacted the Connecticut Yankee Council of Boy Scouts. He was told that there was no Boy or Cub Scout group with number 713, according to the report.

Police are investigating the incident.

Stolen Water Heater

A Purdy Hill Road woman reported the theft of a used water heater from her driveway on May 31. The old heater, valued at only about $10, had recently been replaced, according to police.

Because the theft was in close proximity to the woman's home, she decided to report it, police said. The heater is described as five-feet-high and 100 pounds.

Liberty is on the Case

On Saturday evening, K-9 Officer Dennis Bradshaw and his dog Liberty assisted Newtown Police in the search of a wooded area for a man who was considered a potential danger to himself.

Liberty was tracking his scent when the man stepped out of the woods approximately 100 feet ahead of him, police said, adding the Newtown officers took it from there.
