Route 25 Re-Opened to Traffic

Stormy Weather Downs Wire on Main Street

Route 25 between Tollgate Plaza and the Stepney Green was re-opened to traffic shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday after being closed for more than two hours due to a downed live powerline.

According to Monroe Police Lt. Brian McCauley, police barricaded Route 25 in the vicinity of the downed wire at approximately 7 a.m. and diverted traffic in both directions onto Pepper Street.

Stepney Volunteer Fire Department assisted Connecticut Light and Power workers who arrived at approximately 8:45 to repair the downed wire.

McCauley said it is believed the wire came down due to heavy rain hitting the area during the early morning hours.

McCauley added  it is unknown how many residences and businesses were affected by the downed wire, but said police have not received any complaints.

"We are very fortunate CL&P got here so quickly," he said.

McCauley said motorists should still expect some congested traffic due to the detour.
