Drunken Driving Crash Closes Route 63 for Hours

This was the second time this week that a motor vehicle crash into a utility pole caused a road closure on Route 63 in Naugatuck.

Route 63 near Bradbury Street - at North Church Street near Hop Brook Golf Couse - was closed for several hours Saturday after a drunken driver struck a utility pole, police said.

The pole was busted at 1:10 Saturday morning when Reuben Barnes, 29, of 169 Margaret Circle, Naugatuck, drove into it and thens led the scene on foot, police said. He turned himself in at the Naugatuck Police Department a short time later.

Barnes was charged with driving under the influence of drugs/alcohol and evading responsibility. He was released on a $500 bond and is scheduled to appear at Waterbury Superior Court on Nov. 29.

This is the second time this week that a portion of Route 63 been closed due to someone striking a utility pole. after a man who doesn't have a license hit a utility pole around 6 a.m., abandoned the car and was caught by police walking to his girlfriend's house on High Street.

Myself and all of my neighbors who lost power for over 12 hours when Mr Barnes took out the telephone pole would like to know if he will be replacing all of the perishable food we lost in our refrigerators and freezers? Another winner who decided to take his own and others lives in his hands as he gets behind the wheel drunk. And then - after his fun night out he is charged with Driving Drunk, Evading Responsibility and and his actions end up costing thousands of dollars for the replacement of the telephone pole, response of the Fire Department and EMS. And for the Naugatuck PD to first search for him and then to stand by and keep the road closed for 12 hours while the pole was replaced and repairs were made. Ironically after he posted his $500 bond he was home in his bed comfy and warm sleeping it off while everyone else cleaned up his mess.

For a first offense these are mandatory: Either (a) up to six months with a mandatory minimum of two days or (b) up to six months suspended with probation requiring 100 hours of community service.. $500- $1,000 fine... 45 days license suspension, followed by one year driving only a vehicle equipped with an ignition interlock ... attorney fees...BIG $$$$...insurance premiums...more BIG $$$$$

I think some of you are drnking the same stuff Mr. BArnes was. 1. Thankfuly no one was injured 2. He probably was out at night and was driving home early in the morning. 3. If you are out of power for 12hrs. your fridge should last ad a couple bags of ice will keep the frozen stuff slavagable, if it doesn't it is time to get a new fridge. People make mistakes, let us be thankful no one was injured.
