Someone Stole a Hunter's Rifle

Officers are investigating the theft of a rifle and of two marker plates.

A Stolen Firearm

After hunting in Newtown on Nov. 19, an Elm Street man told police he put his rifle on the backseat of his pickup truck, covering it with sweatshirts so nobody would see it, according to a report filed on Dec. 2. Nevertheless, the $350 Yugoslavian SKS rifle was stolen, police said.

The victim told an officer that the gun was unloaded but not locked, and that he was unsure of whether he had locked his truck doors, police said.

The man said he realized his gun was missing on Nov. 22 and checked with members of his family before reporting the theft, according to police.

Nothing else appeared to have been stolen from inside the truck, the report said.

Stolen License Plates

A Sunset Hill resident told police the front marker plate was missing on his '97 Dodge pickup truck two weeks ago, then on Nov. 30 he noticed that the rear plate and the screws were also missing, according to the report.

Police said the victim had parked his car behind his house and did not see or hear anything during the theft.
