Steel Going Up Soon for Police Station Additions

Frank Bent, clerk of the works for the Monroe police station building project, expects to see framing going up for the two small additions by Aug. 10.

Frank Bent, clerk of the works for the Monroe police station building project, gave building committee members a tour of the construction site and an update on the progress last week. The Architectural Review Board recommended and the Historic District Commission approved matching brick for two small additions and concrete was ready to be poured for the floors.

"When will we start seeing steel?" Building committee member, Gary Scrofani, asked.

Bent said, "The steel is being manufactured now. I would say by Aug. 10 it will be going up. I'm very optimistic about that."

During the tour, Bent showed where a brand new generator had been installed.

Several lantern light posts that had been taken out of the ground during the early stages of the project have dents and other damage. Bent said it would cost nearly twice as much to repair them as it would to replace them with new ones.

Committee members were encouraged by news of the Town Council's recent approval of a resolution for the $500,000 Small Towns Economic Assistance Program grant for the project.

Chief John Salvatore said the approval made way for the production of a sign naming the state agencies and the officials responsible for receiving the funding. The sign is being kept by the construction trailer.
