A Norwalk man allegedly swerving and crossing over the center line in his 2008 Jeep Wrangler, while driving on Route 110 from Shelton to Monroe at 5:26 Monday night had an off duty police officer driving behind him the whole way.

Police said Monroe officers stopped the Jeep Wrangler on Route 110 at Moose Hill Road and that Vaughn had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on him, glassy, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. Vaughn told officers he had not been drinking, according to the report.

However, field sobriety tests showed he was under the influence, leading to his arrest, police said, adding a breath test at headquarters showed he was impaired but had a blood alcohol level within the legal limit. Police said a urine sample was also taken to test for illegal substances.

Routine Traffic Stop Leads to DUI

Police pulled over a '98 Volkswagen driving north on Main Street at 8:26 Monday night without its taillights illuminated and the routine traffic stop led to a DUI arrest, according to the report.

Miguel Cortes, 42, of Main Street in Monroe was charged with driving under the influence and failure to have tail lamps. He was released on $250 bond for a July 3 court date.

Police said Cortes had the distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage on him and that field sobriety tests determined he was under the influence. While at police headquarters, Cortes allegedly refused to take a breath test, police said.
