White's 3-Run Homer Powers Monroe's Finest Over the Bravest

A Monroe firefighter recaps police officers' 15-12 win over he and fellow firefighters in an annual softball game held after the Sprint for Monroe.

Wolfe Park was a particularly safe place to be last Sunday afternoon, as Monroe police officers and volunteer firefighters gathered to battle it out in a game of softball following the Sprint for Monroe race. After some back and forth scoring and some laughs under sunny skies, Monroe Police came from behind to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th inning and then won it on a walk-off  three run home run by Sgt. Keith White.

Despite Monroe Fire having much more fan support, in the end Monroe's Finest beat Monroe's Bravest by a score of 15 to 12. A rematch is planned for September.

The police officers were off-duty while the Monroe and Stepney volunteer firefighters essentially are always on duty, so a fire truck was parked near the fields in the event of a fire call, but there were no interruptions.

"Its nice to get together in this setting because usually we only see each other during stressful situations like car accidents or fires. But since the police won the last two times, we're looking forward to the rematch this fall," said Monroe Deputy Fire Chief Josh Krize.
