After listening to concerns of residents, Department of Public Works, police and fire crews over downed trees and power lines, First Selectman Steve Vavrek said, "I am calling on the town of Monroe to postpone Trick-or-Treating until Saturday, Nov. 5."
Vavrek informed townspeople of his recommendation on his listserv Sunday. Winter Storm Alfred covered the region in wet snow causing 90 percent of Monroe to lose power, according to Monroe Emergency Management.
"There are just too many unsafe conditions, including potential icing, that could lead to more serious issues," Vavrek said of celebrating Halloween on Monday night. "I thinks it's an issue of better to be safe than sorry!"
