Update: Tuesday, 3:50 p.m. First Selectman Steve Vavrek highly recommends that nobody go trick or treating on Halloween because of extremely unsafe conditions in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
The CL&P Outage Map shows 6,887 of its Monroe customers without power or 87%, which is down from 90% this morning.

Update: Tuesday, 10:03 a.m. CL&P's outage map shows 100% of Monroe customers are without power.
Town officials and emergency responders met behind closed doors at 9 a.m. and a Code Red alert with information for residents should come out later this morning.
A long line at the Dunkin Donuts at the corner of Elm Street and Route 111 went out the door and along the sidewalk. Only coffee is being served.
Saw cars in the parking lot of Stop & Shop on Route 111 and the traffic lights are working. Big Y is probably open too, but haven't checked.

Update: Monday, 8:08 p.m. A woman on the Stepney side of town went into labor tonight and was taken to the hospital.

Water pressure was lost at Monroe Town Hall.

Update: Monday, 6:41 p.m. Winds are maintaining speed of 40 mph with gusts as high as 63 mph.
Update: Monday, 6:30 p.m. Monroe firefighters are assisting on a call in Easton, where a tree fell on top of a firefighter.
Seventy-five percent of Monroe is without power now.

Other roads news: The traffic light at Stanley Road and Route 59 is out. And there are trees on wires in the 900-block of Monroe Turnpike and a tree on wires in the 130-block of Wheeler.
337 Wheeler Road has been opened up after a fallen tree was removed.
Update: Monday, 4:20 p.m. A visitor to Monroe Patch's Facebook page told me she heard that Pepper Street lost power.
Update: Monday, 4:16 p.m. Before giving a new batch of road updates, police remind people to stay off the roads during the storm. Here's the updates:
Purdy Hill Road is closed at Doc Silverstone Drive with a tree on wires.
Wheeler Road is closed at the 140-block with a tree on wires.
Wheeler Road is closed at Winthrop Place because wires are down.
There is a partial blockage at 29 Wheeler Road with a tree on wires.
Update: Monday, 3:58 p.m. Quarry Ridge Road lost power.

Update: Monday, 2:57 p.m. Residents visiting on the Monroe Patch Facebook page tell us there are power outages on Bradley Drive and Walnut Street.
Update: Monday, 2:49 p.m. There's a report of low hanging wires on Purdy Hill Road. Police say it's passable for most traffic with the exception of big trucks.
Update: Monday, 2:44 p.m. CL&P's Outage map now shows 173 Monroe customers are without power.

A highway crew is working to clear the north end of Old Zoar Road near 111 from a tree and wires that went down.
Update: Monday, 1:32 p.m. A tree is down on Jenny Ridge Lane at Teller Road, one lane is open.
Update: Monday, 12:10 p.m. Police sent out a Code Red saying the peak of the storm will be this afternoon. They ask everyone to stay off the roads.

The peak of Hurricane Sandy is supposed to be Monday night continuing into Tuesday morning and this article will serve as the central hub for all news on the storm with info and story links. It will be a good article to bookmark.
What we know so far in town:
WiFi was being installed at the senior center at around 11 a.m. and should be up within minutes. Guests will not need a password to access it.
The Monroe Chamber of Commerce luncheon featuring First Selectman Steve Vavrek has been cancelled. It had been scheduled for Tuesday at McGowan's Pizzaland at noon.
Monroe Public Schools will be closed until Wednesday.
Monroe Town Hall offices will be closed on Monday and Tuesday with only "essential personnel" coming in.
Gov. Dannel Malloy has extended the in-person voter registration period until Thursday, Nov. 1. Previously the deadline was Tuesday, Oct. 30.
The Monroe Senior Center is open as an emergency shelter as of 8:30 a.m. on Monday. Pets are allowed in carriers with proof of vaccinations for rabies. Guests are asked to bring their own bedding.
Police ask that all political signs and other signs and decorations be removed so they cannot become airborne and dangerous during Sandy's heavy winds.
Recycling pickup has been moved to Wednesday.
Trumbull mall is closed on Monday.
The Town Council meeting has been postponed either to Wednesday for Thursday — depending on the weather conditions.
