State Rep. Debralee Hovey (R-112) announced today that she is retiring from public service and will not run for re-election in 2014.

Hovey, an Assistant Republican Leader in the House Republican caucus, made her decision after 12 years of service to the 112th district of Monroe and Newtown. She will complete her term on Dec. 31, 2014.

"I ran not because I wanted to be involved in politics but because I believed I had something to contribute as a public servant,” Hovey said. “It has been my honor to serve the people of Monroe and Newtown and I thank everyone for their continued support.”

“It is now time to turn the page to a new chapter in my life, a new adventure. I am looking forward to having some privacy and spending time with my husband and family," she said.

Town Leaders React to the News

Monroe First Selectman Steve Vavrek offered the following comment in response to Hovey's announcement:

"I would like to thank Debralee for all of her many accomplishments over the last 12 years. She has worked very hard for the people of both Monroe and Newtown. Debralee is a mentor to many and will be sorely missed. Thank you for your service."

Newtown First Selectwoman Pat Llodra also shared some thoughts:

"Your advocacy for Newtown has been strong and effective. I thank you sincerely for your efforts on our behalf for these past 12 years. And, on a personal note, I will miss working with you. Your laugh, your sense of fun, your passion, and your range of interests and experiences have made being with you so enjoyable. More than anything, though, I will remember your commitment to constituent service. Enjoy this new chapter in your life!"

Shocker... she got her pension, embarrassed us nationally. Now she leaves.

I always found Ms. Hovey to be responsive and helpful. I thank her for her service and wish her well on future endeavors.

Anyone have a list of alleged accomplishments during her time in office?
Susan Osborne February 20, 2014 at 08:50 AM
Thank you Ms. Hovey for all years of service. I was always amazed that at every community event I would turn around and you were there, including my daughters Girl Scout Gold Award ceremony! People may say what they may, but I do believe it must be the hardest job in the world representing the public interest because no matter how hard you try, you will never please everyone. You have represented our Town with dignity and I believe you gave it your all. Congratulations on turning the page to the new chapter in your life! Enjoy!

Its long overdue. I had to call Hovey 6 times before I would get a response. It wasnt worth the wait. I got uncaring, and badly directed advice, getting me nowhere but seeing more government corruption. She ascribed to obedience, rather than doing the right.

Hovey told me just yesterday she was instrumental in getting the police the money for their new station. I am not surprised bc when I called her with complaints over police abuse 2x, she did not want to hear my story and cut me off. The Selectman, the same. What is going on in a small town like this? Who knew? I think investigation is needed.

She showed her true character in her insulting, crude comments directed at the courageous and honorable Gabby Giffords. That was disgraceful.

Jeff Guttman!

Free Speech - Sad but very true. In Monroe, it does not matter where you stand on issues. A republican candidate for office could walk up and down Main Street swearing and giving everyone the middle finger and still win an election. I bet you could stand outside the polls and insult everyone and still win if you are a republican. Whoever is nominated by the republican town committee will be our new state rep. Experience and qualifications - who cares! It is all about that letter R next to your name.
Joe Mancini February 21, 2014 at 09:49 AM
James you just described Jeffrey Guttman!
Walt February 21, 2014 at 10:49 AM
Ladies and Gentlemen, you're next State Rep!... J.P.!
Free Speech February 21, 2014 at 11:20 AM
Congratulations JP on your victory! Now that you have been selected by the republican town committee you are officially Monroe's new state rep starting in November 2014. Your hard work paid off. As far as an opponent goes...WHO CARES! You have that magic letter R next to your name which means VICTORY in Monroe. I hope you decide to represent all Monroe's citizens. But if you decide not to that will be OK too because nobody in Monroe cares what you will do or say come election time. Just flash that letter R and you will win every time. As far as your position on issues---WHO CARES! Your experience---WHO CARES! Will you do a good job---WHO CARES! Scandals or wrongdoing...WHO CARES! The letter R next to your name---now that we DO CARE ABOUT! Good luck JP!

Thank HEAVENS she will finally be gone - but as many of you have commented - just by another clone pretty much. Nice to read about Hovey's latest scandal in the CT Post the past few days too. I'm sick of hearing how wonderful she is from some of the die-hards. How difficult is it to show up to Girl Scout functions or hand a commendation to a veteran. Both very worthy things, mind you, but also political schmoozing at its finest.
Joel Leneker February 22, 2014 at 07:41 PM
Ok all you Democrats, now us the time for you to show us all what you are made of nominate a candidate at get to work. I will be interested to hear how you will tackle the issues facing CT, such as the highest taxes on the east coast, largest tax increase on business and ever escalating education costs. What is your plan to bring business to CT, lower the tax burden on the middle class. Give us someone that is going to work for Monroe.

Gee I hope J.P. is done standing and waiting in line for the one and only bathroom at Hovey's house. Look it up, instead of saying no comment he actually said he knew there was no other bathroom because he had to stand waiting in line to use the only one in the house.
Bob Loblaw February 22, 2014 at 11:42 PM
“I can attest to the fact that I had to wait in line at DebraLee’s house to use the bathroom,” Sredzinski said. “I wished she had another one I could have used.” from an article from the patch about fundraisers held at her home.

Two words: Joel Leneker! You can do it Joel. Who else is better qualified? Who else would make a better State Rep than you? A left leaning pro-rights, pro choice gay-rights activist? Oh wait, this is Monroe. A town still stuck in 1955. Joel you would be perfect for Westport.
