Monroe Public Schools Announces Finalist for Superintendent of Schools

James Agostine, who is currently superintendent in Region 16, will visit Monroe on Thursday.

The Superintendent Search Committee has announced that James Agostine is the finalist to succeed Dr. Colleen Palmer as Monroe's superintendent of Schools. Agostine is currently superintendent in Region 16.

He has been named as the finalist after months of an intensive search and interview process, according to a press release issued by the search committee this afternoon.

In Agostine's career he has been a middle school teacher, assistant principal, principal, has served as superintendent for Prospect/Beacon Falls for the last four years, and as a Board of Education member in Region 14.

"During Mr. Agostine's tenure with Region 16 he has been recognized for making tremendous strides in educational leadership, organizational management, community and Board of Education relations," the press release says.

Agostine will be in Monroe on Thursday afternoon to be introduced to school staff, administration and town officials. He will also be attending the Parent's Council meeting next Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 10:30 a.m. in Central Office.

Monroe residents interested in meeting Agostine are invited to attend the Parent’s Council meeting.

How is it that we got to this point without any discussions at a BOE meeting. Is there even going to be a vote at a board meeting or is this just a done deal? What kind of financial package will he receive and for how many years?
Alan Vaglivelo October 26, 2011 at 09:25 PM
The vote on Mr. Agostine will be held at Mondays Board of Education meeting.

The search process is confidential.

I would have to assume from this article that this Board learned from the last Superintendent hire about timely disclosure of details and the importance of involving the community/administrators/teachers in advance. The last Board chair encouraged the hiring of Palmer to be pushed through and the teachers, staff, parents never met her until it was a done deal which surely didn’t help in her acceptance. Although I would assume a certain amount of confidentiality is required, I believe a Parent's Council member, Administrator and Teacher were on this committee if I heard correctly which is a tremendous improvement compared to the last hire. Thank you to the BoE for your efforts and I personally hope you got us a good one!

How will you be voting Mr. Vaglivelo?

It was nothing new to include a parent, a teacher, and an administrator on the search committee.
Patrick O'Hara October 27, 2011 at 01:51 PM
yes-it was new

I must be thinking of principal search committees then. Sorry.

Yes-I would agree the search committee for principals have had the make up you described.
