'Big Mike' Mathews Shows Tricks on the Basketball Court (Video)

The Harlem Wizards will take on a team of Monroe Elementary School teachers at Masuk High School on Feb. 9.

"Big Mike" Mathews, a former Harlem Globetrotter with a size 17 shoe, recently promoted an upcoming game with his current basketball team, the Harlem Wizards. The New York team known for its fancy dribbling, trick passes and slam dunks will take on the teachers of Monroe Elementary School on Feb. 9.

The PTO fundraising event will be held at Masuk High School on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 5:30 p.m. Tickets to the family fun night cost $10 a piece and $15 at the door. Tickets may be bought in advance at Creative Kids Craft Studio and I Spy Consignment or online at Harlemwizards.com.

Mathews met classes of Monroe Elementary children in the gym for several sessions on Wednesday morning to play games and award prizes, while promoting the big game.

"We play basketball all over the world. We make a lot of people happy," Mathews told a crowd of students sitting in front of him. Then he held up a red, white and blue basketball. "This is what we call our magic basketball, because it can do a lot of tricks," Mathews said. "It makes a lot of people happy."

Monroe Elementary School Principal Deb Kovachi said the charity basketball game should only raise modest funds for the PTO and is meant more as a fun evening for parents, students and school staff.

Mathews said the Wizards often play against public officials such as mayors, police, firefighters and teachers in entertaining games for charity.
