National Day of Prayer is May 2

The Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter of the DAR and the CT State Society of the DAC wish to remind people of all faiths that Thurs., May 2 is the National Day of Prayer.

The members of the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and the members of the CT State Society of the Daughters of the American Colonists (DAC) wish to remind people of all faiths that Thursday, May 2 is the National Day of Prayer.

Because of the faith of many of our founding fathers, public prayer and national days of prayer have a long-standing and significant history in American tradition. The Supreme Court affirmed the right of state legislatures to open their sessions with prayer in Marsh vs. Chambers (1983). Days of prayer have been called for since 1775, when the Continental Congress designated a time for prayer in forming a new nation.

The National Day of Prayer was established as an annual event by an act of Congress in 1952, and was signed into law by President Truman. President Reagan amended the law in 1988, designating the first Thursday of May each year.

With everything happening in our nation from natural disasters to man-made tragedies it is more important than ever for our nation to pray for strength and hope.

The DAR and the DAC perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence.  These groups dedicate themselves to historical preservation, promotion of education, and encouragement of patriotic endeavor.  Any woman over 18 who can prove an ancestor served in the American Revolution is a prospective member.  For more information on the DAR, visit http://www.sarahriggshumphreysDAR.org.  For more information on the DAC visit http://nsdac.org/.
