Members of the Sarah Riggs Humphreys-Mary Silliman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and guests gathered to celebrate Flag Day at the Shelton Community Center on Friday, June 14. Chapter Regent Christy Hendrie welcomed everyone to the ceremony and spoke about the origin of Flag Day and the DAR’s role in promoting education, patriotism, and preservation of historic places. At the start of the program, a Moment of Silence was held for the six-month anniversary of the Sandy Hook tragedy. Green and white carnations were placed at the base of the flag by the granddaughter of our chapter regent, a Sandy Hook kindergartner. The ceremony also included an Invocation and Benediction by Chaplain Lucille Wells; recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States and the American’s Creed; a chorus of God Bless America; and a brief program.
The DAR perpetuates the memory and spirit of the men and women who won American independence. The group also helps maintain historic state properties.
