Misunderstood Snakes Get Their Moment in the Sun
It's the year of the snake and the Beardsley Zoo and DEEP want to share knowledge of what they say is a largely misunderstood member of animal society.

If you've ever wanted to see snakes up close and personal (and handled by professionals), then these programs are for you.
The Connecticut’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Connecticut’s Beardsley Park Zoo are hosting free programs at local state parks, with the goal of teaching people about snakes and the role they play in the environment.

Event Details
- 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, August 7, at Squantz Pond State Park, 178 Shortwoods Road, New Fairfield
Visitors can attend at any time during the program and may pack a lunch and visit the park too, according to the press release from the state DEEP.

All programs run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
- Wednesday July 10: Kettletown State Park, 1400 Georges Hill Road, Southbury
- Wednesday July 17: Kellogg Environmental Center, 500 Hawthorne Avenue, Derby
- Wednesday, July 24: Stratton Brook State Park, Route 309, Simsbury
The following locations are hosting Year of the Snake presentations by Russ Miller of the Meigs Point Nature Center. Snakes will be available for visitors to see, touch and learn about from 1 to 2 p.m. The program is free but there is a state park admission fee.
- Saturday, July 20: James L. Goodwin Conservation Center, 23 Potter Road, Hampton
- Saturday, August 3: Chatfield Hollow State Park, 381 Route 80, Killingworth
The year of the snake celebration is sponsored by the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation. If you have questions, call the Kellogg Environmental Center at 203-734-2513 between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
