Let's Paint the Town Purple! [VIDEO]

A fundraiser for the Trumbull-Monroe Relay for Life was held at Edith Wheeler Memorial Library Saturday. This has a video of a Beatles' song.

Edith Wheeler Memorial Library's entrances were adorned by purple balloons and many of those visiting venders' tables and listening to the Seth Lefferts "Phony Hearts Club Band" & Co play Beatles' tunes inside the community room wore purple T-shirts. Saturday was "Paint the Town Purple, a fundraiser for the Trumbull-Monroe Relay for Life.

The Relay benefits the American Cancer Society. It will be held at Masuk High School on June 8 and 9.

Catherine Lombardi, who organized the third annual "Paint the Town Purple", said the weather hurt the turnout.

"It was kind of slow," she said. "It started to rain and the band had to move inside. It was good turnout of teams."

Lombardi is the human resources director at Monroe Town Hall. She and four other town employees formed a team for the relay called "Team Inspiration."

"I'm so proud of her, because she's a survivor herself," First Selectman Steve Vavrek said of Lombardi.

Lombardi credited Edith Wheeler Memorial Library Dir. Margaret Borchers for accommodating the volunteers at the library.

Children got to tour a Stevenson fire truck in the parking lot during the event, and the lucky winner of a raffle will have the choice of either a ride to school or home from school in a Monroe fire truck. Tickets cost two dollars each and will be sold until June 5. The drawing will be at Masuk on June 8. Proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.
