Sprint for Monroe Passes the Baton to a New Director

A swarm of runners will once again be at the starting line on Cutlers Farm Road on Sunday, June 2, when Sprint for Monroe has its 21st annual race, but the popular event has a new director this year.

Amy Primorac, who has always been active in town, is taking over the position from longtime volunteer Paul Moyse.

Primorac said she's learning the ropes from Moyse.

"He's just been so wonderful," Primorac said of Moyse Monday. "I can't say enough. He's a great athlete, has a business in town and is great for the community."

Moyse is a chiropractor with an office in town.

Primorac is also working with Fran Welch to get the schools more involved this year and fellow volunteers Ed Butler, Frank Bent, MaryBeth Zarifian, Kevin Early, Tom Taylor and Jennifer Magas.

Primorac said she has gotten to meet local businesses, who are donating items for a raffle and gift bags.

Once again, Kimball Group is the title sponsor. Newtown Savings Bank is the premier sponsor and presenting sponsors are Eye On Monroe, Minuteman Press of Monroe, Mr. Handyman and Aqua Hyrdate.

Primorac has been working with a number of volunteers too.

Proceeds from the Sprint for Monroe benefit community charities and causes. Among those Primorac says potential recipients include Monroe Education Foundation.

A portion of the proceeds from the main race will benefit the Chase Kowalski Fund.

Chase was one of the young victims of the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School. His grandfather was a longtime member of the Monroe EMS.

The annual kids sprint before the main race will be called the Race4Chase and all proceeds will go to the foundation.

It's a lot more work than I thought it would be," Primorac said of organizing the Sprint for Monroe. "But it has a great history in the community. Everybody knows it and everybody loves it."
