ts simple, forget about the school. If you're home roof was leaking because it was 30 years old…Read More would you go up there and caulk it or would you say ok, I guess i got my money's worth, time to bite the bullet and put a new roof on the house before the leaking causes thousands of dollars worth of damage to the interior. Just a matter of common sense. If the roof is leaking its time for a new one. Sure, the price tag sucks but you will be paying a hell of a lot more out of your tax dollars to repair all the interior damage caused by the water and mold plus a new roof. Sounds like there is plenty damage already based on this article. Water is a structures worst enemy. Why wait until there is catastrophic damage? You'll pay for repairs now and within a few more years it'll be leaking in another area. Stop the madness and just get on with the project.

Yes I absolutely agree the funds may not be going to the proper place always but I do believe…Read More there's an adequate amount of funds available to fix the problems at hand. Yes, Madison's debt is less, but they also invest more in the town than us and less in the schools than us. Not sure how well their schools are so maybe that's felt? They increased their school budget .75% last year so it's quite comparable, but we do spend more per pupil. They are also in our DRG. Their property values are slightly higher than us(Monroe-440K, Madison-484K). Median income is slightly higher there (Monroe -102K, Madison 108K). Our town's are both named after presidents and begin with M too! ;)
Still think it's not a good comparison?

Alex - That's not what I'm saying at all - But can you honestly sit there and tell me that we put…Read More our funds where they should be going? I've lived in town for 17 yrs and it's always been a struggle to pass a budget and maintain the infrastructure properly. My in laws have lived here over 40yrs. Ever since the budget referendum has been in place it's been a battle. Perhaps Madison doesn't have to nickel & dime? From what I can tell, they have very little debt service ($3m + less than ours) and it would appear from their budget that they spread funds adequately accross all avenues. We bond nearly everything we do and as a result the interest we pay out is for a longer period of time. Simple planned maintenance allows you to stay on top of issues rather than have a Town Police Dept. go with no upgrades or renovations since the building was constructed in the early 70's or a town hall with the original roof! I may have missed it in the link, but I didn't see what their tax income was. I believe they have a bit more commercial property than we do. Notice their school budget is similar to ours as well and I'd be willing to bet they didn't go flat for 2 yrs. Cost of living in Middlesex county can't be compared with that of Fairfield County and that also has to be taken into consideration.

Kelly I am in total agreement with your comment regarding the guard house. It bothers me that the…Read More police officer assigned to Sandy Hook cannot move up a few feet and protect Fawn Hollow to ensure no suspicious cars/people have access to the FH parking lot and school grounds. If the police officer is already there wouldn't to make sense to move up a few feet to protect FH as well?

@Steve: But only if someone in town is making sure Honeywell is providing all of the information to…Read More make future informed decisions. Is there anything in the contract that specifically identifies a committee or commission whose sole responsibility is to monitor this project? If not "Danger will Robinson".
Steve Kirsch April 23, 2013 at 01:55 pm
Don't forget that Honeywell is going to be monitoring all of this as well and providing information…Read More back to the town.

That's a valid point since there could be lots of different elected officials over these next 10…Read More years - hopefully there will be continued, close monitoring by the Town finance people and BOE administration.

Reading this really upset me with the NFL. I can't believe that ONLY 3 teams are wearing decals…Read More in memory of SandyHook School. What difference does it make if you are on the East Coast or West Coast. I have so much respect for the Patriots, Giants and Jets for showing such a wonderful tribute to this very sad loss. And to the Patriots, who will be sending up 26 individual flares for those who lost their lives.
Excellent tribute men !

My family has worked closely with both Susan Austin and Bruce Lazar over our several years in the…Read More Monroe Public Schools... and we couldn't be happier for both of these fine administrators. Congrats to Sue as she takes her new role in Stamford... and we're thrilled to hear that Bruce will take the helm at Stepney... especially after all his great work at Chalk Hill, Jockey Hollow and now Sandy Hook. (Glad to keep you in Monroe, Bruce!) Best of luck to both!!

I live in Oregon and when I read this story I felt so happy inside. Sometimes I feel like hugging…Read More all those children in Sandy Hook - but we all live so far away. To see such a wonderful human bringing so much joy in the lives of these children is such a wonderful hope to all of us who live far from Newtown but worry about the people there everyday. Thank you for reminding people about the importance of reading and talking with young children;…Read More singing and talking about family life ( describing what is for supper, etc.) Read to Grow provides free new and gently used books to children of all ages .
Families can apply inline at www.readtogrow.org. There is a family application and a program application. The most important thing one can do for children is to provide books to them so they have a healthy supply of books to practice their reading skills and to have good bonding time with parents and siblings as stories are read together. Excellent advice. Greatly underestimated value to the child in this hurried, frantic world.

I know Mike personally, and while its great that he is giving an attempt at caring, his opinions at…Read More best carry a slight bias and at worst are developed from his willful ignorance of any facts that contradict his views. He is partisan to the point that his involvement detracts from any conversation between reasonable people. He trolls the web for propaganda which he happily re-posts without checking the sources behind it. I for example was disturbed to see him post something today that implied the US Army is planning on rounding up political dissidents and holding them indefinitely, based off a youtube video posted by a user called "StormCloudsGathering" who also shared gems like "Zionism is a Racist Ideology" and "Sandy Hook WTF?!!!". Consider that before you vote "Schreiber 2032"
