Firefighters from Newtown, Stepney, Trumbull, Easton, and more fight massive fire on Judd Road.
The sounds of explosives and fireworks rocked the quiet wooded neighborhood of Easton bordering on Monroe on Friday. A tall pillar of smoke seen for miles away heralded the fire to many, who followed trucks to the corner of North Street and Judd Road. Chief of Police James Candy said the owner’s collection of explosives hampered the ability of the firefighters to approach the house and fight the fire. The owner of the house, Sandy Cooper, 507 Judd Road, Easton, was not known to be at the scene, but police officers said that all family members were safe and not in the house. "It was a beautiful house; huge," said Ted Tallcouch, who was cutting the grass across the street when the Deputy Fire Marshall pulled into the yard, parked, and ran …

A fire was reported at a house on Judd Road in Easton at around 6 p.m.
EASTON — Several residents living on the Hattertown section of town saw smoke and heard sirens and a series of explosions at around 6 p.m. Friday. A house fire was reported on Judd Road in Easton — near the Monroe border. Kevin Catalano, spokesman for the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department, said the explosions people heard were from fireworks stored inside the house. Tankers from Monroe's fire companies and other towns were brought in to assist the Easton Volunteer Fire Department with tankers, because there are no hydrants in the area, according to Catalano.
Someone forced open the back window of a house.
A 48-year-old Monroe man told police on May 16 that his house on Pepper Street was forcibly entered. He is not living there as it is undergoing construction, according to the report. Police said a rear window that had been locked was forced open and that the screen was removed. Though entry appeared to have been made, police said nothing seemed to have been taken.

Credit Card Fraud A 56-year-old Monroe Turnpike man had credit card problems after shopping at Job Lot in Seymour, according to a fraud complaint filed Tuesday. The homeowner attacked the flames with a garden hose and a firefighter finished off most of it with an extinguisher.
Fire Marshal Bill Davin spoke with a group of firefighters in Charles and Bonnie Schneiders' driveway at 250 Webb Circle at 5:30 p.m. Monday just as a turkey led a line of chicks across the pavement a few feet away. The tranquil scene stood in stark contrast to just a few minutes earlier when flames shot out of the screened porch on the left side of the house. Davin said Bonnie Schneider had pulled into the driveway while arriving home from work at around 4:47 p.m., when she saw the flames coming from the side of her house. "She called 911 and stretched out her garden hose," he said, adding that Schneider also managed to get both of her dogs out of the house. No other family members were home at the time, Davin said. Stevenson Fire …

Officers are investigating the burning of a vehicle they believe was stolen, a Huntingtown Road man was arrested on a warrant for allegedly stealing $2,145 worth of jewelry and a DUI arrest was made on Cutlers Farm Road.
The following information was supplied by the Monroe Police Department. No arrested person is guilty until so judged in a court of law. A DUI Arrest A Harvester Road man was arrested for drunken driving Saturday after a police officer driving behind him on Pepper Street at around 1:06 a.m. saw his vehicle cross over the double yellow line before making a sudden wide, sweeping turn onto Cutlers Farm Road, according to the report. Police said the driver, Nicholas H. Sarantos, 24, had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on him and that field sobriety tests determined he was under the influence. At headquarters Sarantos' blood alcohol level was above the legal limit on two breathalyzer tests, the report said. Sarantos was charged with DUI, …

Town officials took part in a groundbreaking ceremony for the $4.1 million police station renovation and addition.
A backhoe parked by a large pile of dirt stands in front of the sidewalk behind the Monroe Police Department, where yellow caution tape cordons off the area by the main entrance. A large concrete slab that had served as the base of an old lattice radio tower is on the lawn, replaced by a gleaming white monopole reaching over 100 feet into the sky. After nearly eight years of planning and studies, the town finally broke ground on a $4.1 million renovation and addition to the police station, which should modernize its facilities. Public officials gathered for a groundbreaking ceremony outside the building police share with Monroe Town Hall at 7 Fan Hill Road on a breezy Thursday evening, under a deep blue sky. Police Chief John Salvatore was…

A worker at Great Hollow Lake suspects someone is taking more than the legal limit of two fish a day and a vandal may have caused a Forest Road resident's car to stall.
A 'Mucky Substance' A 50-year-old Forest Road man told police Thursday that his mechanic told him a "mucky substance" in his vehicle's gas tank caused the engine to stall. He had to have it towed to a service station the day before. Police said the mechanic could not identify the substance nor explain how it got into the tank. The Forest Road resident believes a vandal put it in his tank overnight when his vehicle was parked outside his home, according to the report. However, police said the man told them his vehicle had stalled, so he added gas from his own can and it would not start afterward. A Bag of Fish A Parks & Recreation crew member was working at Great Hollow Lake Tuesday afternoon, when he saw a fisherman with a large bag of …
