In the summer of 1950, a cottage fire in Stevenson spurred area residents to purchase an engine and form their ownMore fire department.</p> <p>A wood and cinder-block building designed by Newtown architect Harold Smith was built and a 1930s vintage American LaFrance pumper was bought from the Bridgeport Fire Department. The Stevenson Volunteer Fire Co. grew from there, adding trucks to its apparatus. In 1964, it became the first fire company in Fairfield County to establish a Junior Volunteer Firefighters Corp.</p>

Stepney Volunteer Fire Department is headed by Stepney Fire Chief Mike Klemish, who oversees 30 firefighters andMore eight junior firefighters. The Stepney Volunteer Fire Department covers emergency calls within a 26-mile radius, providing protection for more than 20,000 residents in Stepney, Stevenson and Monroe center. It also provides coverage for Trumbull, Easton, Newtown and Shelton on a mutual aid basis. It uses four engines, a truck, a heavy rescue, a squad and a chief's vehicle. It has a dispatch center and can serve as a shelter during emergencies.</p> <p> </p>

Station 2 was built as a substation for the Monroe Volunteer Fire Department.

The building houses a Quint 200,More Tanker 216 and Engine 202. It has a day room, a kitchen and storage for the Engineering Division.</p> <p>The Jockey Hollow Road firehouse shares its space with the Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service.</p>
