Stepney Volunteer Fire Department covers emergency calls within a 26-mile radius, providing protection for more thanMore 20,000 residents in Stepney, Stevenson and Monroe Center.</p> <p>Aside from its primary area, Stepney Volunteer Fire Department also provides coverage for the towns of Trumbull, Easton, Newtown and Shelton on a mutual aid basis.</p> <p>Stepney Fire Chief Mike Klemish and his staff oversee 30 firefighters and eight junior firefighters.</p> <p>Formed in 1917, the department has two stations at 88 and 801 Main Street and uses four engines, a truck, a heavy rescue, a squad and a chief's vehicle. It is currently the only ladder company in town.</p> <p>Stepney Station 1 was built at 88 Main Street in 1923 and Stepney Station 2 opened its doors on 801 Main Street in 1983.</p> <p>Station 2's six-bay complex houses one engine, one truck and a support unit. If C-Med goes down, this station is capable of running a back-up dispatch center for all emergency operations. It is also designed for use as an emergency shelter.</p>
