Monroe Town Hall is housed in a red brick facility built on the Monroe Green in 1972. A gazebo adorns the grounds inMore the front.</p> <p>Municipal departments carry out town business during the day, and meetings of town boards and commissions are held in the Town Council Chambers and conference room on week nights.</p> <p>The First Selectman's Office is located at Town Hall, along with the Town Clerk, Tax Collector, Assessor, Registrar of Voters and Fire Marshals' offices.</p> <p>Departments in the facility include Building, Finance, Planning & Zoning, Inland Wetland, Parks & Recreation, Information Technology, Public Works, Engineering and Human Resources.</p> <p>The Monroe Police Department, which shares the building, takes up the lower level in the back of the property.</p>

Edith Wheeler Memorial Library

Monroe's town library was founded in 1954, making it one of the newest public libraries in Connecticut. TheMore little building on the Town Green soon needed more space, and moved into the south wing of a new municipal building known as Monroe Town Hall in 1972.</p> <p>The library still had to keep up with a growing town decades later, and construction was completed on its current facility in 2006. It was named in honor of philanthropist Edith Wheeler. Director Margaret Borchers and her staff strive to make Edith Wheeler Library the  "knowledge navigator" for its community.</p>

Monroe Congregational Church

Monroe Congregational Church was built on what is now the Monroe Green in 1847, but its roots run far deeper thanMore that.</p> <p>The town church was formed at the request of residents who petitioned the state government for it, because they had tired of making long winter journeys to Huntington Parish.</p> <p>Elizabeth Gray donated Beardsley Hall on Old Tannery Road to the church in 1886 in memory of her late husband, Dr. Edward M. Gray, a village physician.</p> <p>A few years later, a new parsonage was bought on the Green. The house is rented out to residential tenants.</p> <p>In 1956, the congregation outgrew church facilities and an early school building was bought at auction to expand Beardsley Hall. Then in 1967, ground was broke for Rexford House, which opened its doors in 1968.</p> <p>The church itself underwent an expansion in 1985. Pews were installed, a balcony was built, and a handicap entrance was added.</p> <p>Rev. Peter W. Allen is now Monroe Congregational's pastor and Rev. Jennifer M. Gingras is associate pastor.</p>
